Music
I love music. Naturally, I’m very much into using the internet to discover and share artists and songs I like. If you are also into music and want to share your likes with me, please feel free to follow, add, or suggest music for me in the following ways.
Almost Mainstream
This is my music blog. I try to post one song a day, usually newish but sometimes older, sometimes based on things that are going on, sometimes just because it popped into my head. You can find it here, or listen to a playlist, from newest to oldest, by clicking here.
Last.fm, CBC Radio 3, the Hype Machine, ex.fm, Rdio, and Soundcloud
These are my online music services of choice. Brief profiles of them are below, or you can read full tutorials in this series.
CBC Radio 3 is a combination radio station/online music database consisting entirely of independent Canadian artists. That sounds limiting, but there is a ridiculous amount of amazing stuff on here– I sometimes go months at a time listening to almost nothing else. You can find my profile and playlists here.
The Hype Machine is, in its own words “keeps track of what music bloggers write about… If a post contains MP3 links, it adds those links to its database and displays them on the front page.” It’s a great way to discover new music, and also create a customized, constantly updating radio station based on other users, select artists, or select blogs. You can find me here.
ex.fm is a Google Chrome extension that automatically discovers mp3s embedded in the web pages you visit. You can listen to them continuously (even when you close the original window), and subscribe to specific pages and listeners. Here’s my profile.
Rdio is a paid subscription service that gives you access to hundreds of full-length albums, tracks, and playlists. It’s got a great interface and mobile app and a pretty good blog, as well. Basically, imagine if every Tuesday you had full access to almost every new release. That’s what Rdio is. My profile is here.
Last.fm is the granddaddy of social music sites. It can keep track of what you listen to on your iPod, on the Hype Machine, and a variety of other places in order to track your tastes and recommend other artists you might enjoy. Since that latter service isn’t available in Canada without a paid account (or some creative hacks) I don’t use it much for that– more for a music management system, and a one-stop shop for me to share what songs I’ve been listening to and what I’ve really like lately. My profile is here.
Soundcloud is essentially the YouTube of music, giving artists and promoters the ability to upload tracks and share them anywhere, including letting anyone embed them on other websites. I’m here, and you can share your tracks with me by dragging them to the box below:
